Professional Associations

Michael Furlong , M.D.

As an Affiliate of TLC Laser Eye Centers, Dr. Hyatt and Dr. Furlong together help patients who are interested in vision correction surgery, including LASIK, PRK, and cataract surgery.

Dr. Michael T. Furlong, a former LASIK patient himself, has enjoyed his newfound vision so much that he has dedicated his practice to the magic of advanced vision correction procedures. His greatest pleasure is listening to his patients describe the excitement of waking up the morning after their surgery and being able to see clearly without glasses or contact lenses for the first time in years.

Dr. Furlong meets and works with each patient personally throughout the entire vision correction process. His personable approach allows you to ask the right questions and his honest answers allow you to make the right decision about your eyes.

A graduate of Stanford University, Dr. Furlong received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1988.

He earned his M.D. from the University of Hawaii in 1992, graduating in the top 10% of his class. He was elected to membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and earned both the B. Kent Bennett and the V. Edward Franchville awards for outstanding medical student in the field of ophthalmology. He completed his internship at the University of Hawaii in internal medicine and surgery.

Following medical school, Dr. Furlong completed a 3-year residency in the ophthalmology program at the University of Utah Moran Eye Center, one of the most competitive surgical training programs in the country.

Dr. Furlong elected to further his formal education with a one-year refractive surgery fellowship at Canada's prestigious eye institute, the Gimbel Eye Center. During this additional full year of formal LASIK training, Dr. Furlong studied under Dr. Howard Gimbel, one of the world's leading authorities on refractive surgery.

Following this specialized training year, he traveled to Bangkok, Thailand and China to train foreign ophthalmologists in the most current refractive surgery techniques. He has also co-authored several articles and book chapters on refractive surgery.

After a year in private practice in Arizona, where he specialized in small incision cataract and laser refractive surgeries, Dr. Furlong came back to the Bay Area in 1998 and established Furlong Vision Correction. He has performed more than 17,000 LASIK procedures to date.

Dr. Furlong, a refractive surgeon specialist, continues to teach others about the latest vision surgery advances by offering regular continuing education courses to other medical professionals in the Bay Area.

"I've been in the optical field for almost 3 years now. You will see me at the front desk, helping you with scheduling your appointments, filling out forms, and submitting insurance claims for you. When I'm not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband, mother, and my niece. My husband and I are huge Raider fans, so we enjoy going to their games. I am a big movie fan. I also like to play, color, and read books with my niece. You might also find me playing with my dog Sassie who likes it when I take her to park!"

Externs and Our Externship Program

Our office believes in lending support to people entering the healthcare field. Therefore, since 2004, we participate in the Externship Programs of several Medical Assistant colleges including Western Career College, Everest College, IBT, and Heald College. As a participant, Blossom Valley Eyecare and its staff contribute their time and expertise in supervising on-the-job training of recent college graduates. Graduates must spend 160-180 hours of post graduate externship before they earn their Medical Assistant certification and diploma. We thank the externs for allowing us to contribute to their education and training.
